Dr. Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori was one of the first female Physicians who graduated from the University of Rome in late 1890s. She later became interested in education after working with children with developmental disabilities.
She revolutionized the education by creating it a child-centered pedagogy, because she believed that children were much more capable than they were thought to be. During her lifetime Dr. Montessori visited three continents and worked with many children, and observed that children, when given purposeful materials and freedom within structure, educated themselves—a concept which she called auto-education.
In 1907, the first Montessori school-'Casa dei Bambini' was opened in San Lorenzo, Rome. Later, by popular demand from many leaders and aristocrats around the world, Dr. Montessori went on to train Montessori teachers, which led to open up many children's houses - Montessori schools around the world.
Dr. Montessori was a huge advocate on children's rights and was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize, and lived from 1870-1952.
